I’ve always loved to read books in their true paper form (I have yet to convert to a kindle– does anyone here use them? Let me know your thoughts in the comments!), but lately, I’ve also been really into audio books. I’m planning on doing a separate post covering my favorite books to listen to, but thought it was loooong overdue to do a physical reading list!

I’ve found that the books I prefer to listen to are vastly different from the books I prefer to read, so luckily, this series will continue! I’ve been reading a lot more lately, putting more of an emphasis on creating time for it, so this series should pick up in frequency, as well.

So, without further ado, here is what is currently on my nightstand! What I am in the middle of, as well as have queued up in the (hopefully) near future.

What I’m currently reading: Seriously… I’m Kidding by Ellen DeGeneres

I’ve had this book for awhile; I actually bought it while I was reading Bossy Pants by Tina Fey. I love those lighthearted reads where you also learn a lot from someone who rose to the top- in a positive way. This book is laugh out loud funny, and just all around will make you feel like the world is a kinder place.

About the book: “I’ve experienced a whole lot the last few years and I have a lot to share. So I hope that you’ll take a moment to sit back, relax and enjoy the words I’ve put together for you in this book. I think you’ll find I’ve left no stone unturned, no door unopened, no window unbroken, no rug unvacuumed, no ivories untickled. What I’m saying is, let us begin, shall we?”

What’s queued up next: Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee

While I was in school, Harper Lee’s iconic novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, was an instant favorite of mine. As a lover of books and literature, I was automatically hooked on the story. Needless to say, when it was announced that decades later there was a follow up book being released, I hopped right on it. I’m a little shocked to say I have yet to start this novel, but I’m excited to start it right after finishing Ellen’s quick read!

About the book: “Maycomb, Alabama. Twenty-six-year-old Jean Louise Finch—“Scout”—returns home from New York City to visit her aging father, Atticus. Set against the backdrop of the civil rights tensions and political turmoil that were transforming the South, Jean Louise’s homecoming turns bittersweet when she learns disturbing truths about her close-knit family, the town, and the people dearest to her. Memories from her childhood flood back, and her values and assumptions are thrown into doubt. Featuring many of the iconic characters from To Kill a Mockingbird, Go Set a Watchman perfectly captures a young woman, and a world, in painful yet necessary transition out of the illusions of the past—a journey that can only be guided by one’s own conscience.”

What’s queued up after that: Message in a Bottle by Nicholas Sparks

I found this novel in a 2nd hand bookstore during my family’s week long stay this summer in the Outer Banks, NC. Truthfully, I have a love/hate relationship with Nicholas Sparks. The inside cover peaked my interest, but we’ll see how it goes! (I have a gut feeling I’ll fall in love with a character only to have them die..) It seems like it will be a good choice when I want something light to pick up and not get hooked for hours. Anyone else love keeping those books on hand, too?

About the book: Divorced and disillusioned about relationships, Theresa Osborne is jogging when she finds a bottle on the beach. Inside is a letter of love and longing to “Catherine,” signed simply “Garrett.” Challenged by the mystery and pulled by emotions she doesn’t fully understand, Theresa begins a search for this man that will change her life. What happens to her is unexpected, perhaps miraculous-an encounter that embraces all our hopes for finding someone special, for having a love that is timeless and everlasting.

Questions for you:

  1. Have you read any good books lately?
  2. What was your favorite book you were required to read in school?
  3. If you had to choose.. audiobooks, Kindle, or paper?

I can’t wait to hear what you think of Go Set A Watchman.. I need to read that sometime because I loved To Kill A Mockingbird.

Message in a bottle — Prepare to Cry.

I love that you do these posts! I haven’t been as much into reading as I used to be in high school, so I love hearing what’s popular and good now! I’m actually in the middle of making a post about a book I recently finished on the plane last week. It’s a sappy love story.. but it’s good!

I’ll definitely let you know what I think of GSAW! I loved TKAMB too, so I’m hoping it’s just as good.

I’ll be sure to check that post out of yours! Love your blog. <3
